How To: Revamp A Wig

Updated: Apr 1

Hey there, wig lover! Whether you're new to the wig world or have been rocking them for years, we know that maintaining those luscious locks can be a bit tricky. But fear not! In this blog, we'll talk about everything from taming those tangles to washing without the worry. We're here to share our tried-and-true tips so that your beloved wigs stay good looking, just like you!

Wigs are confidence boosters, self-expression pieces, and secret weapons for those days you just don't feel like wrestling your natural hair (we've all been there!). But just like any prized possession, wigs need a little tender love and care to keep them in tip-top shape. Proper wig maintenance helps preserve the hair quality and extend the lifespan, this ensures you get the most value out of your purchase. So let's get wiggy with it and learn more about wig care together!

1. Detangle Your Wig

If your busy schedule involves activities like meetings, workouts, or errands, make it a habit to detangle your wig afterward. This helps you maintain its appearance and prevents tangles from setting in.

Remember to detangle the nape (located at the back of the neck). On top of the friction from clothing, the nape of your wig is exposed to elements like wind, humidity, and heat, which can dry out the hair and increase the likelihood of tangling. While detangling, you may notice some hair shedding— this is normal. Here are some tips for detangling while minimizing shedding:

-Use a wide-toothed comb or our specialized wig brush to gently detangle the hair

-Start from the ends and work your way up to avoid causing unnecessary shedding

-Apply a lightweight serum in areas where tangles are most likely to occur to improve manageability

-Spray curly and wavy textures with water first to help soften the hair and ease the process

2. Clean Your Wig

Just like your natural hair, wigs can accumulate dirt, oil, and sweat over time. Cleaning and conditioning the wig helps keep the hair soft and detangled, making it easier to manage and style. Remember to use careful and gentle hands to avoid damaging the lace. Improper cleaning techniques, including scratching or using harsh products with sulfate, can cause shedding.

Clean your wig every ten wears or when you notice a buildup of product or every three weeks, if you wear it daily without removing it. Here are some tips on how to clean your wig:

-Drench the wig under lukewarm water and add a small amount of Hydrating Shampoo

-Gently massage the shampoo into the lace, wig cap and hair to remove dirt, sweat, and oils

-Rinse thoroughly with water, then apply a nice amount of Hydrating Conditioner to the hair only

-Leave the conditioner on for ten minutes before rinsing with cold water then allowing the hair to dry

3. Style Your Wig

Wigs can be styled for special events such as weddings, parties, proms, and other celebrations. They allow you to achieve a polished and elegant look that suits the occasion. Short on time or travel often? Our wigs can be worn glue-less so they're a convenient solution if you want a quick and hassle-free way to achieve a desired hairstyle. Here's what you should remember when styling your wig:

-Choose styles that minimize friction and are manageable even with a busy schedule

-Add concealer to the lace until it mimics the color of your skin

-Use heat protectant and medium heat settings (450° max) to avoid heat damaging the hair

-Apply water, oil and styling foam to curly or wavy textures for a more defined look

4. Store Your Wig

The best thing about our glue-less wigs is that they're removable! Yes, removable... so you can take them off every night. If you plan to wear it the next day, place your wig on a stand to preserve the style. If you are no longer wearing the wig, store it our specialized satin bag to keep the hair soft, lint free and detangled.

Storing your wig properly can help maintain its shape, style, and overall quality. Here are some tips for storing your wig:

-Consider styling your wig before storing it so your next install is smooth and easy

-Gently fold the wig in half and keep the hair aligned in its natural direction to prevent tangling

-Place the wig in a satin bag or the original packaging to prevent dust from settling on the hair

-Keep your wig away from direct sunlight, heat sources, and damp areas

With these four steps, you can enjoy the beauty of your wig for years to come. And don't worry! If maintaining your wig feels overwhelming, remember that there's help available.
