What does natural hair care mean?
According to Tai’Lor, a licensed natural hair specialist, natural hair care is an overall phrase used to reference the hygiene of the hair that grows from a human scalp. It is the act of cleansing, conditioning, dusting, and styling the hair with the use of botanicals; to improve scalp and hair health. It’s often used in the textured hair community and embraces your God given kinks, curls, coils, or waves.
A natural hair specialist can help you to properly care for your natural hair. They will not use lighteners, chemical relaxers, or excessive heat— so you can feel and look great without compromising the integrity of your natural hair.
Remember, all hair service providers are different. Some may specialize in traditional natural styles, like flat twists or cornrows, while others may specialize in modern protective styles, like knotless braids or wig installs. We recommend that you choose a service provider that aligns with your hair needs and goals.
Why is natural hair care important?
Natural hair care is important because it keeps your hair and scalp healthy. It promotes the use of products that are plant derived and free of synthetic ingredients. It also improves your confidence and self esteem, as it is an act of self love, which helps you to show up as your authentic self in the world.
Many beauty products contain a mix of botanical (meaning organic or plant derived— shea butter, castor oil) and synthetic (meaning inorganic or artificial— parabens, sulfates) ingredients. If possible, you should avoid using products with synthetic ingredients. We recommend looking at the ingredients list of all products before using them on your natural hair to be safe.
Our natural hair care product line, TTHC Botanicals, is packed full of safe ingredients that help to cleanse, stimulate, and nourish hair follicles. This promotes healthy hair growth and can improve the overall quality of your hair.
How can I prioritize my natural hair care?
We recommend having a schedule to determine what your priorities are, this will help you spend the right time on the right tasks. Once you make time for natural hair care, you won’t feel overworked and can enjoy well deserved self care time.
We make it easy with our healthy hair packages. Each package is designed differently to fit your current hair goals and includes a reduced service rate. For example, our Flourish healthy hair package comes with six natural hair services that are redeemable throughout the year and is ideal for women who want to prioritize their self care time.
Which natural hair care service should I book?
Tai'Lor recommends that all new clients book a protein treatment + full trim or a braid set + protein treatment + full trim. A service with a full trim is especially recommended for clients with extreme heat damage, rough split ends, or uneven hair shapes.
A full trim is not to be confused with dusting. A full trim focuses on the overall condition of the hair and should be done at least once in your natural hair care journey, while dusting only focuses on the thin, damaged ends of the hair. Dusting is preferred by women with healthy hair, who want to retain some of their length.
Treatments are recommended every six to eight weeks, especially for those who wear protective styles. This will strengthen your hair and improve its ability to hold the weight of the extension. Remember to read the hair service description and to contact your service provider if you have any questions— do this before booking to avoid misunderstandings.
